Hands down, the Church of the Assumption in Bled Slovenia puts this Castle town in the top 10 in Europe
Travel Porn delivers visual stimulation from around the world each week (most likely Fridays when I’m not stuck in a backwater somewhere). If this doesn’t get you hot, bothered, and fantasizing about your packed luggage (carry on, roll on, backpack, whatever turns you on) you might not be a traveler…
The Castle Town of Bled, Slovenia
In honor of my upcoming trip back to Slovenia this weeks travel porn is all about the BEST castle towns in Europe. Yes, I’m going out on a limb here by putting Bled in the Top 10 Castle Towns in Europe. I’m going even further out on a bending branch by not showing you a picture of the Castle!
What town in Europe do you think has the best Castle Town?

What about Mount St. Michele in northern France. Watch out for the tide and quicksand!

Awesome Scenery and location.
That is one super awesome looking castle in Bled. I think the Neu********** whatever castle in Germany always looks pretty amazing too. Anything with a nice setting of mountains or forest around it gets high marks form me, to give a bit of colour to the dull, grey stone walls….

I’ve got to get myself to Bled… I must say I’ve been a little disappointed about most castles I’ve seen in Europe, however I’ve really just gone to the touristy ones. There’s actually quite a few in the southern Netherlands and in Belgium which are quite nice and not too touristy.

To see the best Castles you can’t escape Europe, and to see some of the best of Europe, you can’t escape Castles!
The castle on Lake Bled looks pretty awesome though, definitely a Top 10′er!

If there is one thing Europe has a lot of it’s castles.
If you are travelling to the UK to look at castle certain ones (Tower of London) hold a lot of interesting history. Others although old and historic are not present in a way that explains there history and purpose.
If you aren’t visiting a popular castle, do some background research.
This picture reminded me of my childhood fantasies, really pretty! Each and every castle in Europe is different and special because they their own unique characteristics, architecture and history. I so love castles! I envy Kate Middleton a lot.
Wow that’s how fairy tales and princesses were born!

Well you took my answer Todd! I have been a HUGE supporter of Slovenia and written a number of posts promoting the country in cooperation with the Slovenia Tourist Board. I love telling people about Bled but part of me wants to keep Slovenia a secret too. Slovenia is a fantastic country and very underrated.
If I had to pick somewhere else, I would also like to explore castles in the UK as well. England, Scotland, and Wales all have some great ones!

A worthy winner! I loved my visit to Bled. Although an evening stroll around the lake wasn’t such a great idea. Especially forgetting the torch!!!
Love the blog, kind regards, Si

For some reason the Church of the Assumption reminds me of the caslte you see at the beginning of Walt Disney movies and animations.
That is one of the most beautiful castles Ive ever seen, thanks for sharing this photo, it looks like something out of Disney

Hi Todd, just a quick note to tell you that this blog post (almost) helped us decide where our destination for today’s day trip was going to be (I say “almost” because it was already on the short list before your post, but it may have helped the final decision).
In other terms. We went to Carcassonne today.
Full post coming soon.

I’ve only experienced a handful of castle towns myself, but I’ll have to place my vote for Neuschwanstein in Bavaria (and yes I did have to google the spelling).

Since I live in nearby, with no doubt my vote goes to BLED.
And welcome back to Slovenia, I invite you to drink a coffee …
Hey Tomaz, we’ll in Bled on the 21st! I’d love to have coffee and meet in person. Also, if you have any recommendations on where else to visit/stay in Slovenia I’d love to hear your local advice.

Hard choice.

I’ll go with a double feature: Beynac and Castlenaud in the Dordogne department (one cannot go without the other)
(blatant self-promotion here: both coming soon in my “David in France” blog

We just visited Prague last month for the first time. What an awesome city, and the beautiful historic castle dominates the skyline. That would definitely be on my Top Ten list!
Nice one Glenn.
Ok, I’m going to sound stupid (or French) but what’s a castle-town?
I mean, I know what a castle is, I know what a town is, but not sure about the castle town thing..
David´s recent [type] ..Sant Juan de Caselles Church in Andorra
Its a town with a castle in it
Or its a town build around a castle, or its a town with a castle nearby. Either way, you get to walk around town, or in a castle and you are blow away by the beauty of either a) the town b) the castle c) nature d) combination
You French are just too lucky to take castles for granted!
LOL… I see… I was gonna say “isn’t it the case for almost every town?”

And yeah, I don’t know how to answer your question, there are dozens if not hundreds of such towns, just in my home area.
So, I’ll go with Carcassonne for the most impressive and famous one. For less impressive or famous… well… a few dozens towns in South France.

I meant “South-West France”

Give us the best “unknown” one in South-West France! I already know about Carcassonne
