Hey Eric, I studied Asian Studies in undergraduate and focused on Japan. The english teaching scene has become more competaive these days but you can still find jobs as long as you have any BA. However, i’d suggest doing a certification course like the CELTA (I think that’s the name) that gives you a specialized certificate in teaching english as a foriegn language. With that you are sure to meet the requirment of any employer. Good luck.

Hey! I really enjoyed your post and it certainly outlines a ‘style’ of life that I hope to achieve and live. Like you said I don’t plan to mirror your life, but it gives hope to someone who is currently wondering if it is possible to travel and still be wealthy enough to feel safe, healthy, and free. I was wondering, what college did you go to and what did you major in? The only reason I ask is I’m wondering how important it is to employers (schools) that you have an english major to teach english abroad (which is what I want to do)

I loved your article because that is exactly what I started doing five years ago. I worked in South Korea, traveled. Then Taiwan, traveled. I am now at 52 countries and heading off to South America to do it again. It is a completely possible way to live your life the way you want. Thanks.

HI Dave, Actually I’m the one who gave the Kabukicho tour. We started in Roppongi with Jake then I took over in Kabukicho. Normally I do this kind of stuff for journalists in exchange for coverage of my audio tour, but have done a couple paid tours. I could probably do it if you have half-a-dozen friends who could each chip in 3000. But the cheaper, audio version of the tour is good too!

Hey guys. Well I live in Russia so obviously(stereotypes are true) I did give bribes. Once when I needed to pass the exams for my drivers license. Second was when I wanted to buy a exam at my college. Third was when I wanted to buy an exam for IT in my college and had to buy a pepsi for the tutor for it… Stupidest bribe ever, and the only one we got caught for. Third was when me and my friends were celebrating something and the cops got us, of all 6 or 7 people me and one other guy were the unlucky ones to get our documents taken so we had to go with the cops to theyr post and had to pay 500rubles for it. The original price was 1000rubles but my friend bargained it down to 500 saying that today is a holiday and 1000 is to much ahah. And then I payed for my exams in another university. But that is very common here in Russia so no big deal about it

My Secret to living and traveling cheap is to do it on a boat. Sailing is actually very cheap (if you refuse to look at the glossy magazines). You can use the wind and go thousands of miles at zero cost. Boats can be bought for the price of a cheap car. Once you get wherever your going, you have your house and all your belongings with you. You can bring enough food with you to live for months and if you get sick of the view, pull anchor and look for the next “paradise”. Your blog and writing are very inspiring to me. I’m currently into a multi month investigation to see if I’m going to go cruising again, but for good this time. If I do, I’ll be taking my family of four with me with the goal of staying out until the kids graduate from high school (about 4 years).

Nice to meet you Todd!
Our family has been travelling for about 10 years, twice a year and finally moved to Europe this year to be more centrally located. With our 2 kids, people ask all the time, how do you do it? You sacrifice on the day to day stuff, the rewards, like new shiny cars, fancy clothes and private school, but in return we are world educated.
The people we meet online are a smart bunch. Why not live right now, right? You can’t take it with you and the same goes for debt.
